In October of 2003, the American federal government filed a patent application for “Cannaboids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants”. Checkout this US Patent with assignee, “The United States of America as represented by the Department of Health and Human Services”.

With the recent conviction of Dawn Wells, Mary Ann of Gilligan’s Island, we know what at least two of the folks on the Island were growing. Bob Denver - Gilligan himself - was arrested in 1998 after he signed for a FedEx delivery of 30 grams of marijuana. Police spent more than two hours tearing up his house and Mary Ann was his dealer…
Do we not have REAL issues on which to work: climate change, widespread poverty and hunger, enormous social disparities across the planet, in almost every land?
USA’s crime-and-punishment or EU’s enlightened approach to marijuana?
Interesting article that posits the USA’s prisons-and-punishment versus the European Union’s doctors-counselors-legalize it approach to marijuana. The EU position saves them considerable public monies and there is a measurable impact on controlling hard drugs that are actually dangerous. In contrast, the USA’s beat-the-pot-smoker approach means that marijuana is easier for teens to acquire than tobacco and leaves an estimated $113 billion industry untaxed and underground, with hard drugs everywhere, leaving decriminalization to more enlightened states and cities.
