A brief history of the famous Doctor Who original theme
Filed under: art, music, science fiction and fantasy, technology, video
I stumbled on Doctor Who in 1975, while I was a nursing student in Chicago. This series birthed a lifelong love of British comedy, science fiction, and fantasy.
In 1963, Ron Grainer of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, wrote the score for the theme that Delia Derbyshire realized, using truly avant-garde experimental methods and sounds to create the legendary Doctor Who theme. Check out the original, compelling theme music at the BBC website.

Normies, Freaks, and Geeks at WonderCon 2008 in San Francisco
Filed under: science, science fiction and fantasy, technology
common folks and others
I dropped into WonderCon 2008 today at San Francisco’s Moscone Center: wow, there were thousands of people there, children of all ages! From the people in the line with their kids to the cool geeks who gave away their day passes to me (okay, so I gave them to 3 boys who were with their dad in line…), people were friendly, excited, and interesting. I met the charming Noel Neill, aka the original Lois Lane (she starred with the original Superman George Reeves), a most interesting actor (with GREAT STORIES of wearing the suit and being the character in the role of Chewbacca), Peter Mayhew, aka Star Wars’ Chewbacca, and I got a glimpse of hottie Lou Ferrigno, aka The Hulk, who is stunning - he should be called “the Hunk”.
visual art and lit
I picked up a couple of great black and white teeshirts from November Fire, a couple of books about Joss Whedon (”The Psychology of Joss Whedon: An Unauthorized Exploration of Buffy, Angel, and Firefly” and “Serenity Found: More Unauthorized Essays on Joss Whedon’s Firefly Universe”), and a sweet comic by Alison Doran, “The Land of Idaban and Nitwit Meets His Sidekick Candy”.
podcast on a rainy day
I got interviewed for a podcast by Doc from the Heroes of Science Fiction and Fantasy, and also met Willow of Willows Jewelry and a friendly and vivacious Sara Dunn, aka Queen of Trash.
well, I heard…
I was really glad to learn that both David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will return in a new X-Files movie, Brendan Fraser will star in a 3D version of Journey to the Center of the Earth, that J. Michael Strazynski of Babylon 5 fame is working on a new series (or two!), that J. R. R. Tolkien’s son, Christopher Tolkien, has released a new audio CD series based on his books about a pre-LOTR story, and that funny and sexy Steve Carrell will star as Maxwell Smart with Anne Hathaway as Agent 99 in a new movie about the sassy and clever series, Get Smart. It was a totally fab day! Hey, check out my slideshow by clicking the image nearest this text! Read more
