Gay Marriage and Social Justice Meet on Common Ground
California Supreme Court Chief Justice Ronald M. George’s argument in favor of same-sex marriage drew an analogy to interracial marriage bans of the past. Three times he quoted from the court’s 1948 decision in Perez v. Sharp that struck down a state ban on interracial marriage, a high point in the history of a prestigious and influential court. Since science teaches us that there is only a single human species or “race”, I think that term needs to be relegated to history’s dustbins.
I was at the outrageously jubilant celebration in San Francisco’s legendary and dynamic Castro district, where I am blessed to reside. I met and danced with the guy in the foreground in the goldenrod-colored t-shirt and the flawless mohawk. Everyone was floating with such joy and one of the things that I kept thinking about was how incredible was this historic moment for all of us!
UPDATE: on 2 June 2008, the state has ruled that this initiative to legally codify homophobic bigotry into the California Constitution has qualified for the November ballot. Please vote no on this important initiative and send a loud message to the bigots that we want a world of love supported by Californians.
